Medieval 2 is simply a requirement, an offering, a sacrifice to be made to play it. Your armies will be 90% levies, with 2-3 professional units. Professional units are expensive, slow to train, and devastating.you need some good strategy to take them down, even a 1/4 strength professional unit can take on 3-4 levies.
In the first Medieval: Total War the game would end once the turn limit was reached, which was about 400 turns or so, (Depending on which era you chose) it began around 1080 and ends in the early 1400s. I have not reached the end of the 225 turns myself so I'd go with what these guys say. The timeline for the long campaign is the year 1530 but
Medieval, Rome, and Medieval 2 are the only Total War games you should be looking at. The graphics are dated but their experience is timeless. Later TW's the AI cheats. Technically, they cheat in all of them, but in Rome 2 it was made more blatantly obvious.

If you buy into the new shitty combat engine then you have Rome 2, but if you want to actually think about battles rather than minmaxing stupid spreadsheets and don't want battles being glorified statcheck events, there has been literally 0 games worth playing since 2011.
